Local councillor Chris Maxwell has welcomed a new €55m scheme to help forest owners in Mayo recover from storm damage
A new €55 million Government scheme has been launched to support forest owners impacted by storm damage, with landowners in Mayo among those expected to benefit.
The Reconstitution Scheme for Windblown Forests aims to assist with the cost of replanting areas damaged during Storms Darragh and Éowyn in 2025.
Local councillor Chris Maxwell said the funding will provide vital assistance to those facing significant losses.
“This is an important support for landowners dealing with the aftermath of severe storm damage,” he said. “Replanting is a crucial step in restoring affected lands and ensuring long-term sustainability.”
Under the scheme, 75% of the grant will be paid in the year of replanting, with the remaining 25% paid after four years, providing both immediate and longer-term financial support.
Applications must be submitted through a registered forester, and a valid felling licence is required. The level of financial assistance will vary depending on whether the forest was insured at the time of the storms.

Cllr Maxwell encouraged affected landowners to act quickly.
“Those impacted should engage with their forester as soon as possible and begin the application process,” he said.
The scheme is being administered by the Department of Agriculture, which has published full details and application guidelines.
The initiative is part of wider efforts to support the forestry sector following extreme weather events, which caused significant damage to woodland across parts of the country.
