SPORTS GUIDE: Five Mayo sporting clashes to enjoy this weekend

This weekend sees two Mayo sides in massive championship games, while exciting local clashes take place within the County

We’ll be around the grounds to cover all the action with on-the-button updates here as well as in Tuesday’s edition of The Mayo News.

ALL IRELAND MINOR  QUARTER FINAL

Mayo v Offaly

Dr Hyde Park Roscommon, Sunday at 3 pm

Tom Reilly and David Heaney’s Mayo side face Leinster kingpins, Offaly, for a spot in the last four up for grabs. Mayo will be sweating on Tony Carey’s availability as he appears to be an injury doubt, while Cian May is set to miss out. The faithful county have conquered Leinster while winning the big games by narrow margins. A close, free-flowing game of football can be expected.

ALL IRELAND GROUP STAGE ROUND ONE

Mayo v Kerry

Austin Stack Park, Tralee, Saturday at 2 pm

Mayo travel to the home of the All-Ireland Champions, where Liam McHale’s side will be heading in as massive underdogs. The green and red ladies have failed to fire in attack this campaign, as a sensational performance will be needed to topple the current champs.

MAYO SFL DIV 1A

Breaffy v Castlebar Mitchels

Breaffy, Saturday at 7 pm

A West-Mayo derby awaits here with both sides in excellent form. Drawn in the same championship group, there is never much between the Senior contenders. Expect a fiery battle Saturday evening.

MAYO SFL DIV 1B

Claremorris v Garrymore

Claremorris Town Pitch, Saturday at 7 pm

Another local derby awaits in the Mayo GAA League as the battle of South Mayo will commence on Saturday. Claremorris have lost numerous young players to Chicago for the summer, but they will still provide an almighty battle to Garrymore as a tight encounter can be expected.

MAYO SUPER LEAGUE

Ballina Town v Castlebar Celtic

Beleek Park Ballina, Sunday at 2.30 pm

Can Mick Duffy’s Ballina get a result against Stevie Gavin’s Celtic? It seems unlikely as the Hoops attempt to continue their amazing form. With home advantage in Ballina’s favour, Benny Lavelle and Co will need to be in top form if they are to derail this Celtic side.
