Fans of the film The Banshees of Inisherin flocked to Achill Island throughout 2023.
Looking back on 2023, Chris McCarthy, Manager of Achill Tourism, how said the frenzy around the movie The Banshees of Inisherin has catapulted Achill on to the world stage.
“The first couple of months of 2023 went by with a tizzy of international media and Oscar nominations … however, Banshees didn't pick up an Oscar, but, we are left with a great legacy.
“In terms of the Banshee’s trail, the story boards are now in place at the various locations on the island and our staff are constantly signposting visitors to the locations, this is a slow burner and but will last the test of time.”
Mr McCarthy said summer didn't sizzle as expected but Achill still got sufficient visitor numbers and indeed surpassed some other destinations in the county because of the capacity available.
“In general, Achill experienced a bustling year in tourism, drawing visitors with our pristine beaches, captivating landscapes, fabulous greenway, and our rich heritage. This success is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Achill community, making us a sought-after destination.
“As we wind down for the year, things never stop in Achill. A different visitor type is approaching with the diaspora returning to spend time with families. Tradition of pipe bands on New Year's Eve draws massive numbers to see the last sunset in Europe. Our New Year Day swim will see hundreds plunge into 2024, all in the great celebration of fundraising for the Achill RNLI LifeBoat.
“At this time of year, with some businesses in hibernation, the economic benefits of the tourism industry might not be visible but what is certainly evident is the circular economy created by the Achill Gift Cards. Designed to support local businesses, they surpassed expectations. Embraced by the community, these cards foster economic growth and community pride, ensuring benefits are shared. We thank the community for their purchasing and 2023 saw over €12,000 stay in the community.”
After reflecting on a prosperous 2023, he said all at Achill Tourism are energised to continue promoting Achill.
“The community's support for our gift cards demonstrates Achill's resilience and commitment to tourism and community development. In 2024, Achill Tourism plans to build on these successes, collaborating to enhance the visitor experience, support local businesses, and preserve our unique charm. Cheers to a year of achievement, growth, and community spirit. Thank you especially to all our supporters who contributed to Achill's success.”
