Mayo County Council confirms further three-week closure to facilitate electricity interconnector works

Motorists in Ballina are being advised that the temporary road closure on Sweeney’s Lane (L5114) has been extended until Friday, December 11.

Mayo County Council has confirmed that the extended closure will run from Friday, November 20, to Friday, December 11, to facilitate continued cable duct laying as part of the EirGrid North Connaught 110kV Interconnector Project.

The affected section of Sweeney’s Lane is between its junction with the N59 Crossmolina Road and the L-5113 at Commons.

Diversion routes will remain in operation for traffic travelling in both directions.

Northbound traffic travelling from the L-5113 Commons towards the N59 will be diverted via Primrose Hill (L-5113), Kevin Barry Street (N26) and Lord Edward Street (N59).

Southbound traffic travelling from the N59 towards the L-5113 Commons will follow the reverse route via Lord Edward Street, Kevin Barry Street and Primrose Hill.

Mayo County Council has confirmed that local access to properties within the closure area will be maintained.

The council has also clarified that the extended closure period overlaps with the scheduled closure of the L1122 Creggaun Road, which will begin on November 16.

This overlap is intended to provide flexibility in construction scheduling and accommodate progress on the works. However, only one of the two roads will be closed to traffic at any given time.

Motorists are advised to follow diversion signage and allow additional time for journeys in the area.
