BALLINA’s Vincent Roche, CEO of the North Western Regional Fisheries Board (NWRFB) has retired from his position after over a quarter of a century at the helm of the organisation.

Mayor Kelly spoke of Vincent’s enormous contribution to fisheries in the region and, in particular, his impact on the Ballina area when she referred to a number of major enhancement projects currently underway or about to commence.
On behalf of the North Western Board staff, Inspector Michael Lennon spoke of Vincent’s tremendous commitment to fisheries and also entertained those present with a number of amusing anecdotes. Mr Aidan Barry spoke on behalf of the other Regional CEOs and referred to Vincent’s role in heading up the National Marketing Group. The Board’s Acting CEO Dr John Conneely spoke of Vincent’s very strong work ethic and determination in pushing projects through to completion, very often overcoming significant obstacles. He also highlighted his major role in promoting the region and Ballina as a premier angling tourism destination.
The Board’s Chairman, Mr John Walkin spoke on the major milestones in Vincent’s career focusing on his major achievements in the North Western Fisheries Region over his 25 years service. He also spoke of his pride in having worked as Chairman of the Board with Vincent for over 15 years.
In response, Vincent thanked the Board’s staff without whom, he said, he could not have achieved all he had and also thanked his wife Geraldine and family for their support down the years. He acknowledged the assistance he had received for more than 15 years from the Board’s Chairman, Mr John Walkin who, he said, was always there when needed. In closing, Vincent said he was looking forward to taking things a little easier, having more family time and pursuing his other interests.
A number of presentations were made to Mr Roche to complete the formalities of the event.
Along with board staff and members, colleagues from the wider fisheries service as well as local and senior politicians including local Junior Minister Dara Calleary, Jim Higgins, MEP.  The CEO Designate of Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) and recently appointed Chairman Designate of the Board of IFI, Mr Brendan O’Mahony were also in attendance.
