Investigations are ongoing into the cause of a ‘gas’ leak in Westport which led to the closure of a busy street
Westport ‘gas’ leak source yet to be determined
Anton McNulty
INVESTIGATIONS are ongoing into the cause of a ‘gas’ leak in Westport which led to the closure of a busy street for over an hour. Gardaí evacuated several buildings on Bridge Street and the road was closed to traffic after a smell of gas was reported in Carraig Donn at 2pm on Sunday afternoon. Gardaí, the Fire Brigade and Bord GΡis personnel attended the scene and concluded that there was no Bord GΡis leak. The street was reopened to traffic at 3.30pm. The Carraig Donn store has no gas supply and Gardaí and Council staff are investigating the source of the smell. It is believed that the smell may be a result of a gas build-up in the sewers but Town Manager, Peter Hynes told The Mayo News that it was too early to comment on the source of the smell. “We are still investigating the source of the smell and until that is concluded I cannot say anything about it. At the moment we do not have any more information until the investigation is complete,” he said.
