MAYO News journalist Michael Commins (pictured) has topped the national charts for late-night radio. His Sunday night show on Mid-West Radio is now officially the number one show across all of Ireland’s regional stations. The figures are contained in the recently-published JNLR survey of all the stations around the country.
The programme has established a massive listenership across the province and further afield over a number of years. Featuring country music from Ireland and America, as well as some Irish ballads, the show which broadcasts from 10pm to 1am has now the biggest and most loyal audience of any show of its kind on late-night radio in the country.
“Naturally enough I am delighted with the news. It’s all down to being in touch with the people, being out among them and keeping an ear to the ground. The use of the natural local accent of one’s region can never be underestimated when making that connection with the people,” said Michael.
“We have built up an incredibly loyal listenership for the show over the years, not only here in Mayo but also in Roscommon, Sligo and parts of Leitrim where the signal can be received. I have always been aware of the huge Galway listenership to the late-night shows and that is something I have commented on before on a number of occasions. We also have a sizeable late night base in Longford and receive calls from Donegal, Fermanagh, Monaghan, Cavan, Westmeath, Offaly and Clare, while the internet means we now have an outreach around the country and the world.
“I would like to pay a special tribute to Patsy Brown who works on the Sunday night show, taking all the calls and chatting with those who ring in. She has a very special rapport with the listeners and they with her. Also to Cathy Regan who works on the Wednesday night show and to all the others who have been part of the success of the shows down the years.”
