Knock Novena on Nationwide
Michael Commins
THE annual Knock Novena drew to a close on Friday night. Despite the inclement weather conditions which prevailed for most of the nine-day series, visitor numbers were as big as ever with the attendances for the two sessions on Thursday, August 21, the anniversary of the Apparition, up on last year. People came from every county on the island and many from overseas to partake in the Novena which is the largest of its kind in Ireland and the UK. Pat Lavelle, assistant manager at Knock Shrine, said the figures were remarkable, considering that the weather was probably the worst since the Novena was launched over 30 years ago. “The faith of the people is fantastic. Knock pilgrims are a special people. Nothing seems to deter them and their commitment. It really was incredible that so many thousands came from all over the country and beyond to share in this festival of faith. “The basilica has seating for 5,000 people while many still like to stand around at the back which can cater for several more people. We had exceptionally large crowds on the 15th and 21st.” A team from the RTÉ Nationwide programme was in Knock on Wednesday and Thursday filming for a special edition which will be screened on next Monday evening, September 1, between 7pm and 7.30pm on RTÉ1. “We were delighted to welcome presenters Mary Kennedy and Michael Ryan to the shrine last Thursday. They had a very enjoyable day meeting people and pilgrims. They did a series of interviews which will be included on the show. Michael and Mary were very good to work with and they were delighted to get an insight into how things operate here at Knock Shrine. They have the ability to make people feel very comfortable and at home in their presence,” said Pat Lavelle. The Novena was coordinated by Msgr Joe Quinn and Fr Richard Gibbons, assisted by a large team of dedicated workers who ensured the smooth running of the venture throughout the nine day period.
