Mosque for Mayo: Fundraising takes place for Masjid in the heart of busy Mayo town

Castlebar Islamic Centre

A fundraiser has been launched for a mosque in Castlebar by Mayo Islamic Mashajiid CLG [Company Limited by Guarantee].

The mosque is planned for Lucan Street - just off Main Street, Castlebar - and so far has raised just over 2,000 out of a goal of 60,000.

The building promises to be a “welcoming and inclusive space for everyone”.

The GoFundMe states: “We are reaching out with a heartfelt request to help us build a place of worship and community — a new mosque that will serve as a spiritual and social hub for generations to come.”

“In Islam, the mosque is not just a place for prayer; it’s a centre of learning, peace, charity, and community. It is a space where people can come together for spiritual growth, social support, and to engage in activities that benefit the entire neighbourhood.”

The initiative has had the support of 50 benefactors, since the fundraiser was launched in August 2024. The most recent donation to the planned mosque was from two weeks ago.

Mayo’s Ballyhaunis has had a local mosque since 1987 - the first purpose-built mosque in the country. The building accommodates approximately 150 worshippers.

Donation to the Castlebar mosque can be made here.
