A special book titled ‘Martin Keane - one of our own’ is being launched to mark the first anniversary of the death of Westport legend
LIFE AND TIMES A book is being released remembering the great Martin Keane on the first anniversary of his death.
On Friday next it will be a year to the day since Martin Keane died. One full year since an entire community came together and mourned the loss of a Westport icon.
Over the course of the week or so around his death, people cried and laughed in equal measure as they reminisced about the life and times of Martin. His funeral was like no other in the town with his remains being carried from St Mary’s to the Octagon by representatives of all the various groups he belonged to.
To mark the first anniversary of his sudden passing, a book will be launched at the weekend to celebrate his life. Put together by three of his close friends – Liamy McNally, Brian Cusack and Padraig Burns – the book is a collection of memories from people Martin shared his life with.
Liamy McNally has both edited and published the book and he has described it as Martin’s memorial card. “Given his contribution to our town we decided many months ago to do this and we got there in the end. It’s a way of paying tribute to a giant of our town and to say thank you to him and his family for all he did for us,” said Liamy.
The book, simply titled ‘Martin Keane – One Of Our Own’ was designed by Westport’s Shelly O’Neill. It will be on sale after 11am Mass in St Mary’s Church on Sunday next, February 26th. The official launch will take place then on Monday night next, February 27 in the Plaza Hotel at 8pm. Everyone is invited along.
