A website developed by Westport Historical Society was recently chosen by the National Library of Ireland (NLI) for preservation to mark the centenary of the 1916 Rising. It was among the top ten – publicly voted for –websites to receive the honour. The websites will be preserved at the NLI’s National Web Archive in Kildare Street, Dublin. Five sites were chosen because they represented the best record of Irish life in 2016 and five more were voted as the best record of the events of 1916.
Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Heather Humphreys officiated at the awards ceremony before Christmas.
With over 600 websites archived during 2016, the project, ‘Remembering 1916, Recording 2016’ is the NLI’s largest and most ambitious web archiving project and part of its commemorative programme.
The websites chosen by the public range from exhibition-focused and commemorative projects to blogs, media outlets and online news publications, as well as satirical websites and independent, non-profit online outlets.
