Last night, the Sigerson Cup quarter finals got underway as four exciting games played out. In those four games, there were plenty of Mayo representatives in action.
In Limerick, UL overcame Maynooth in an epic battle that required extra time. Castlebar’s Sean Morahan, Westport’s Conal Dawson, Davitts’ Jack Melvin, Ballina’s Frank Irwin and Moy Davitts’ Cian McHale all started for the Limerick students while Kilmaine’s Hugh O’Loughlin and Parke’s Cathal Keaveny featured as substitutes.
Cian McHale scored 1-5 including a superb two pointer in extra time. Frank Irwin also hit a two pointer as he scored a tally of 0-4. Conal Dawson kicked 0-2 while substitutes Hugh O’Loughlin scored a goal with Cathal Keaveney kicking an important point.
After extra time, UL secured victory on a scoreline of 3-12 to Maynooth’s 0-17.
In Belfield, there was late drama as the Maurice Sheridan managed University of Galway secured an impressive win as they shocked a hugely talented UCD team. A last minute two pointer from Galway’s Shane McGrath secured a spot in the last four of the competition. On the Galway side, Aghamore’s Tom O’Flaherty started while Castlebar’s John MacMonagle featured as a substitute. Westport’s Conor Meaney and Claremorris’ Dara Hurley were also part of the panel.
On the UCD side, Ballinrobe’s Diarmuid Duffy and Ballina’s Sam Callinan featured in defence while Parke’s Darragh Reilly and Claremorris’ Niall Hurley started in attack. Hurley kicked five points in total while Reilly pointed once. In the end, the visitors recorded a narrow win on a scoreline of 0-15 to 0-14.
Also in Dublin, DCU hosted Cork’s UCC. In an action packed encounter, Westport’s Finbar McLaughlin was in excellent form as he kicked 1-5 with an emphatic goal while the speedy attacker also kicked a fine two pointer. Claremorris’ Darragh Joyce was also part of the DCU panel.
UL, University of Galway, UCC and Queens are the final four in the hunt for the Sigerson Cup glory.
