Hopes raised for Dalgan jobs

Hopes are high that 20 jobs feared lost following a business closure in Shrule will be saved by new management.

Hopes raised for Dalgan jobs

TWENTY jobs feared lost from the closure of a well known Shrule business may be saved if a new change of management is successful.
Last week Dalgan Wood Industry closed its doors after almost 50 years in business.
At the height of business, which specialised in making and installaing doors, windows and stairs, Dalgan Wood Industry employed over 100 people.
The business was established on Shrule’s Dalgan Road in 1967 by Joseph and Eileen McCarthy. It was later taken over by their son Peter McCarthy. A Dublin office was established by the company in Dublin five years ago and it is understood this was also closed last week.
A source close to the prospective new management told The Mayo News last night (Monday) that it is hoped the 20 jobs at the production facility on the Dalgan Road would be retained.   Fine Gael councillor Patsy O’Brien said the possible loss of 20 jobs to Shrule was the equivalent of 100 jobs to a town. Cllr O’Brien said hoped that the skilled workers who were facing losing their jobs would be able to ‘hold the mantle’ and carry on the business if a reopening was on the cards.
“Dalgan Wood Industry was a great employer for a number of years. I’d hope that these skilled workers would not be totally out of work as a result of the closure,” said the councillor.
