Connacht Minor Championship
Mayo 1-12
Galway 2-10
In Castlebar
It’s the end of the road for Diarmuid Byrne’s Mayo U-17 side as Galway have advanced to the semi final stage while also knocking Mayo out of the provincial championship.
Playing with the wind in the opening half, Mayo led narrowly at the break, 0-8 to Galway’s 0-6. Ballintubber’s Conor Hoban was the standout performer for the Green and Red on the evening as the attacker kicked 1-5 including the only two pointer of the game which came from a free in the first half.
Just two minutes into the second half, Galway’s Shane Heneghan blasted the ball to the net while Aidan Brogan, Fiachra Ó Cinnseala and Conor Hoban replied with well-taken singles for Mayo.
The hosts then went 14 minutes without scoring while the boys in maroon hit 1-3 with their second goal coming from Heneghan once again after the Caherlistrane player got on the end of a high ball.
With 58 minutes played, Galway led by five but Mayo finished strong as they battled on gamely. Substitute Nathan Dooley was fouled in the danger zone and the impressive Hoban finished to the net from the penalty spot. However, time was against the hosts as Galway now advance to the Connacht semi final where they'll play Sligo with Roscommon awaiting the winner in the Connacht final.
A full match report plus reaction will be carried in Tuesday’s edition of The Mayo News.
