MAYO SENIOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP GROUP 1

Ballina Stephenites 3-17

Ballyhaunis 0-11

In Ballina

Start as you mean to go on? Niall Heffernan’s Ballina side cruised to victory on Sunday afternoon as they dismantled Ballyhaunis in impressive fashion.

Shotstopper, Adrian Phillips opened the scoring for the visitors with a fine two pointer free but it was downhill from there. Just seven minutes in, Evan Regan got the first goal of the game after excellent work from the speedy Brendan Collins. The outstanding Regan kicked four well struck two pointers which all came from frees before the Stephenites captain buried to the net once again, this time from the penalty spot.

The movement from the County Champions was immense all afternoon as Niall Feeney got the third goal of the game. Jason Coyne replied for the hosts but the Ballina men were well on their way at that stage. At half time Ballina led 3-12 to Ballyhaunis’s 0-4.

With the advantage of a huge lead, Niall Hefferan rotated his team as big name players such as Evan Regan, Frank Irwin, Padraig O’Hora and Mikey Murray were pulled ashore early on in the fresh half.

The visitors fought to the end in game fashion as Eamonn and Diarmuid Phillips both hit two pointers in a game that remarkably saw eight two pointers.

In the end, it was comfortable for the Stephenites as they produced a damning statement.

A full match report plus reaction will be carried in Tuesday’s edition of The Mayo News.
