League finals to take centre-stage

The Mayo Senior Football Leagues reach climax this weekend with the county Championship looming

League finals to take centre-stage

A scene from last year's league semi-final between Westport and Garrymore.

The shadow boxing is nearly over and the football season is about to get serious. This weekend the senior football leagues draw to a close with intriguing finals, promotion finals and relegation play-offs set to be decided.

Castlebar Mitchels and Westport take centre-stage on Saturday when they contest the Division 1 final at 7.30pm in Hastings Insurance MacHale Park. This promises to be an absolute thriller between two sides teeming with talent. They've met on a number of occasions in recent years and never fail to disappoint. Both sides have been the stand-out talents of the season so far, and have been producing very impressive displays.

Westport are unbeaten after round-robin section with seven wins and two draws while Mitchels had a perfect record until Ballinrobe came to town and beat them last time out. Saturday's game promises to be a thriller and will certainly whet the appetite for the upcoming championship season.

The relegation play-offs will see Aghamore host Breaffy on Friday evening and Charlestown welcome Kiltane the following day. Both matches are well-balanced and could go either way. It remains to be seen which two sides will be heading for Division 2.

There are five games to be decided in Division 2. Crossmolina will take on Ardnaree in Ballina on Sunday at 3pm in a North Mayo derby to decide the league champions while Burrishoole will host Louisburgh and Islandeady will travel to Hollymount Carramore in promotion play-offs over the weekend.

At the other end of the table, relegation play-offs featuring Lahardane and Achill, and Ardagh and Bonniconlon will decide demotion issues.

One of the season's most impressive teams, Eastern Gaels will take on Breaffy B in the Division 3 final in Charlestown on Sunday at 1pm, while Westport B, Claremorris B, Parke B and Kilmovee will contest the promotion play-offs.

At the other end of the table, Kilmeena B and Balla B will face off to decide who will play Division 4 football next season.

The champions of Division 4 will be either Ballinrobe B or Kilmaine B who will lock horns in Hollymount on Sunday at 1pm for a southern stare-off. It promises to be a thrilling weekend with well-contested games across all the divisions as the league season draws to an end and things get serious.
