MAYO’S all-time leading goalscorer, Cillian O’Connor, is to miss Ballintubber’s opening two Mayo Senior Football Championship games, The Mayo News can confirm.

The five-time senior county medallist will miss their opening clash against Aghamore and their local derby against Breaffy as a result of receiving two red cards in last year’s championship.

O’Connor (32) was given his marching orders during Ballintubber’s group stage win over The Neale and their extra-time quarter-final defeat to Castlebar Mitchels.

The Mayo News understands that former Mayo U-20 panellist, Ciarán Gavin, will be available for Ballintubber in time for championship after spending the summer playing football in Chicago.

Stephen Burke, who also played football in the US over the summer, is also expected to be back for Tom Mulderrig’s side.

Brian Murphy, who has been a mainstay of the Ballintubber defence for the past decade, has also returned to action for the club.

The experienced defender has been based abroad but has featured prominently for the Abbeysiders in the club championship over the years.

Ballintubber have qualified for the group stages of the Mayo Senior Football Championship every year since they were promoted from the Intermediate ranks in 2007.
