MAYO star Ryan O’Donoghue appears set to miss the opening round of the club championship, The Mayo News can reveal.

Due to a rule dictating that players who play football with clubs in America may not play with their home club for 60 days, O’Donoghue is currently ineligible to play for Belmullet in the opening round of the Mayo Senior Football Championship.

Under the GAA’s Code 9.2 (e), a player who has received a JI Sanction to play in New York, Canadian or USGAA Board areas from March 1 to October 31 in any one year ‘shall not be eligible to play with the player’s Own Club in Ireland’ for 60 days after the approval.

Ronan Kirrane, Mayo GAA Secretary, told The Mayo News that O’Donongue had his sanction approved by Croke Park on Friday, June 28. Mayo exited the championship to Derry on penalties on Saturday, June 22.

Belmullet are due to play Claremorris on the weekend of Friday, August, 16, 49 days after O’Donoghue received his sanction.

The Belmullet man has been playing with John McBride’s club in Chicago but will miss his club’s championship opener against Claremorris under the terms of Code 9.2 (e).

The code, which was amended at the GAA’s Annual Congress in April, applies ‘other than in exceptional circumstances to be determined from time to time by the Central Council’.

Prior to its adoption, players who were sanctioned to play football in America could not play with their clubs for a period of 30 days.

Belmullet are due to face Claremorris in the first round of the Mayo Senior Football Championship on the weekend of August 15/16.
