Former RTE news anchor Eileen Dunne was a speaker at the Knock Novena
THE annual Knock Novena moves into the final third of the nine day prayer sessions today, Tuesday, when Fr Niall Leahy SJ, a native of Blackrock, Louth, and who is based at Gardiner Street Parish in Dublin, will address the theme: ‘Our Place in the Garden: Living with Humility in Creation’.
The Basilica had two full congregations yesterday (Monday) when Eileen Dunne, who served as a news anchor with RTÉ radio and television for over 40 years until her retirement in November 2022, received a very warm welcome. She spoke on the theme ‘Beyond the Headlines’.
Her late father, Mick Dunne, a native of Clonaslee, Co Laois, served as Gaelic Games correspondent with RTÉ for many years and also for several years before that with The Irish Press.

Breda Casserly will address both sessions at 3pm and 8pm on Wednesday, August 20. She is a former healthcare Chaplain in the Galway Hospice and is a graduate of Galway University and All Hallows College, Dublin. Her topic is ‘Be not afraid: Finding peace in illness’.
The final day of the Novena is Thursday, August 21. Claire Kilroy, a native of Galway, is a seconded Deputy Principal working in Le Chéile Schools Trust. She will address the topic ‘Living Faith: How young people are shaping the future’, when she will speak at the 3pm session.
Fr Richard Gibbons, PP, has served as parish priest and Rector of Knock Shrine since 2012, will lead the ceremonies on the closing evening, starting with the ‘Witness Walk’ where pilgrims walk in the footsteps of the Apparition Witnesses as they made their way to the Parish Church on that wet Thursday evening on August 21, 1879. The evening ceremony at 8pm in Knock Basilica will commence with a commemoration of each of the Witnesses. The theme of his address is ‘Hope is Faith with its Sleeves Rolled Up.’
This will bring the curtains down on the 2025 Novena that was, in the main, blessed with good weather apart from the opening evening.
