A road in north Mayo is expected to be closed over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend after a bridge collapsed early this morning.

The bridge located along a local road in the townland of Cloontakilla close to Carrowmore lake in Bangor Erris was reported to have collapsed early this morning and the damage reported to Mayo County Council. It is understood that no accidents or injuries have occurred as a result of the bridge collapsing and the L5250 road is currently impassable and diversions and road closures have been put in place.

Mayo County Council engineers are due to carry out assessments of the bridge to determine the level of damage to the bridge and what repairs will have to be carried out.

Erris-based councillor Seán Carey told The Mayo News that he understands that the repairs on the bridge may not occurr until after the weekend due to heavy rain forecasted in the next few days.

"With heavy rain and flooding promised for tonight and tomorrow, they will leave the work til Tuesday and will have the road passable by Tuesday evening. It probably won't be a permanent solution but it will be passable," he said.

The council stated they wished to apologise for any inconvenience caused.
