Mayo TD Dara Calleary officially opened three new housing developments and turned the sod on six major housing projects across the county.
Mayo County Council’s ambitious housing delivery programme was showcased today with a €47.5 million investment in housing throughout the county.
IIn total, the Minister for Social Protection and Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary marked the completion of 17 new homes in Church Manor, Ballina; Mount Street, Claremorris; and Cross West, while also commencing construction on 125 additional homes at sites in Ballina, Ballyhaunis, and four urban locations in Ballinrobe.
Together, these milestones represent 142 new homes for individuals and families throughout Mayo.
“Today is a red-letter day for Mayo with a €47.5 million investment in housing. In Ballina, Ballyhaunis, Claremorris, Cross and Ballinrobe, 142 families will soon be able to call a house a home and that is what is most important,” Minister Calleary said.
“I want to thank Mayo County Council and my colleague, Minister for Housing, James Browne, for their unwavering determination to deliver on housing. Minister Browne is steadfast in his focus, not just in Mayo but across the country. Similarly, Mayo County Council have demonstrated their commitment to increase the supply of housing in the county and I will continue to work with them to ensure that this progress not just continues but increases in the years ahead”
Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Cllr Seán Carey, described the day as a landmark moment for the county: “Today is a fantastic day for the entire county of Mayo. Delivering homes to families and individuals is one of the most important responsibilities of a local authority. We are proud to officially open three new developments and turn the sod on six more, which together will provide 142 new homes for Mayo. Each of these homes will give people the security and stability they need to build a better and brighter future.”

Chief Executive of Mayo County Council, Kevin Kelly, outlined Mayo County Council is deeply committed to delivering the homes that the people of this county need and deserve. Housing is one of the most urgent challenges facing local authorities today, and we are determined to lead from the front. The progress we marked today shows that our plans are not just ambitious—they are being actively delivered in communities right across Mayo.
“We are investing in high quality homes in both urban and rural areas, ensuring that every part of the county benefits from sustainable, well-planned development. This work reflects our longstanding commitment to supporting families, strengthening communities, and building a better future for Mayo.”
Mr Kelly also acknowledged the support of the local councillors and the dedication of the Municipal District Offices, as well as council architects, and the Housing Section, 'whose professionalism and drive are central to success'.
“I also want to thank our contractors and engineering partners for their collaboration. Above all, I wish the new residents many years of happiness and security in their new homes.”
