Michael Gallagher has been Head of Sport in The Mayo News since January 2024.
A native of Ballycroy in north Mayo, he has almost three decades of experience in the regional media industry. Prior to joining The Mayo News he served as a sport and news journalist with The Western People.
Twice a winner of a GAA MacNamee Award with The Western People team, Michael has worked in every sector of regional media from courts to investigative reporting and all aspects of sport. He is a fervent advocate for rural Ireland and passionate about the social development of small communities.
He was a selector with Mayo's GAA U-17 football squad which reached the All-Ireland final and has a lifetime of involvement in GAA, boxing and rugby, where he is currently PRO of Ballina RFC.
