Mayo GAA icon Lee Keegan has revealed that he had an alternative suggestion for Man of the Match on ‘The Sunday Game’ from the Mayo-Monaghan game in Clones.
Keegan was on punditry duty for RTÉ in Saint Tiernach’s Park as the Green and Red triumphed by the bare minimum to progress in the All-Ireland Championship.
On the day, the national broadcaster opted to award the accolade to Ryan O’Donoghue. The totemic forward was on fire on the day, tormenting the Farney Army and ending the day with eight points to his name.
The display saw him nominated for GAA.ie Footballer of the Week, as well as being one of three Mayo men in the Team of the Week.
However, in his RTÉ column, Keegan revealed that he would rather have had another Team of the Week inclusion, Jack Livingstone, as Man of the Match.
Livingstone was electric on his Championship debut, making key saves at important times to help dig out the win.
“Jack Livingstone had a stellar debut and was my Man of the Match - I was overruled - and somehow Mayo's net had yet to bulge,” Keegan penned.
The five-time All-Star also voiced his concerns with some of how his home county applied themselves to the task at hand.
“Mayo didn't exactly cover themselves in glory with how they managed the endgame. I suppose some allowance can be made for the fact that it was Monaghan. They have a wildness and a fearlessness which unsettles even the best teams down the stretch.”
