After an outstanding performance which helped Mayo edge past Monaghan in Round 1 of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, one of Andy Moran’s players has been nominated for the prestigious Player-of-the-Week.

He scored an impressive 0-8, including two two pointers. One of them was a phenomenal finish just before the half time hooter, under pressure, he wriggled himself free from a defender and boomed it over.

Ryan O’Donoghue showed his class and fighting spirit in the final minutes, as he earned a crucially important free for Mayo to increase the lead to three points.

For his massive contribution throughout, the Belmullet man has now been nominated for the Player-of-the-Week award.

In his after-match interview, O’Donoghue spoke about the fact that all these one-on-one battles on the pitch, like his wrestles with Monaghan’s Ryan O’Toole, are bringing him back to his boxing days.

The wily full-forward was nominated alongside Craig Lennon (Louth), Tomas McCormack (Armagh), and Brandon Kelly (Westmeath)
