The former boss of the Green and Red had previously been linked to the hot seat with the Tribesmen

Former Mayo manager James Horan has broken his silence on the links between him and the vacant role of Galway senior boss.

The hot-seat of the Tribesmen has been vacant since Pádraic Joyce made the decision to depart after six seasons at the helm.

The 2026 campaign was an unsuccessful one for the men in maroon, relinquishing their grip on the Connacht title and exiting the All-Ireland series at the hands of Dublin.

Many names have been bandied about as to who will fill the bainisteoir bib for 2027. Chief amongst them with the bookmakers at least was Horan.

Horan’s pedigree in the managerial game is high. The Ballintubber native emerged at odds of 5/1 with Boylesports, and has been involved in many successes with Ballintubber, as well as guiding the Green and Red to five Connacht titles and multiple All-Ireland final appearances.

However, he has poured cold water on those notions, speaking on the Irish Examiner’s Gaelic Football show.

“Will I be the next Galway manager? No would be the answer,” Horan stated. “It would be a fascinating job, for sure. Galway is a serious county.”
