A bathing prohibition was introduced at Carrowmore Beach after a wastewater plant failure

Mayo County Council has issued a bathing water prohibition notice for Carrowmore Beach, advising the public not to swim until further notice.

“Do Not Swim” advisory was introduced following a mechanical failure at the Louisburgh Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Mayo County Council said it is liaising with Uisce Éireann, which is currently working to resolve the issue.

The council confirmed that the bathing prohibition will remain in place until the fault has been rectified and it is considered safe for swimming.

Bathing water samples were taken at the beach today (Monday, July 20), and an update will be provided once the results have been received and further information becomes available.

The notice marks the second active “Do Not Swim” advisory in Mayo, following the bathing prohibition that remains in place at Mulranny Beach due to ongoing water quality concerns.

Members of the public are urged to observe all warning signage and avoid entering the water at Carrowmore Beach and Mulranny Beach until the restrictions are lifted.
