The Department of Education have announced that Drummin National School on the outskirts of Westport is to close next week
A national school on outskirts of Westport which has provided education for 177 years is to close next week.
Drummin National School, which is ten miles from Westport town centre, confirmed on their Facebook page this afternoon that the school is to close on Wednesday, June 17.
The statement on social media read as follows: “After a lifetime of learning and laughter, Drummin National School will conclude its journey. Last week, we received official confirmation from the Department that the school will close at the end of June.
“We would like to sincerely thank all those who have supported, encouraged and contributed to the life of the school these past five years, and in the many years previous - past and present families and students, staff members, Boards of Management, neighbours and friends of the school. Your kindness, generosity and goodwill have helped create something truly special for the children here, that will continue long after the doors close.
“On Wednesday, June 17, we will hold a graduation and end-of-year celebration from 1pm to 2.30pm for the current students.
“Following this, from 2.30pm onwards, we would be delighted to welcome all those who have been a part of the Drummin National School story over the years to visit for tea and cake. As this much-loved chapter ends, we take great pride in all that has been achieved here and look forward to seeing the many paths our pupils will follow in the years ahead.”
