The long-awaited Newport Sewerage Scheme has taken a significant step forward, with Minister of State Alan Dillon TD confirming that the Preliminary Business Case for the project is progressing well and remains on track for completion in the third quarter of this year.

Work is advancing on assessing potential treatment options, identifying suitable locations and examining network layouts for the scheme, which will deliver modern wastewater infrastructure to the Co. Mayo town.

A key regulatory milestone has also been reached, with the Maritime Area Regulatory Authority (MARA) issuing a Maritime Usage Licence for the project earlier this month, enabling it to move forward to its next stage.

Minister Dillon said the developments reflect strong momentum behind the scheme. "This is a very welcome step for Newport. Securing the Maritime Usage Licence provides the certainty needed for Uisce Éireann to progress the detailed design and planning work. The Government is investing heavily in modern wastewater services, and the Newport scheme is a clear priority within that national programme."

Once the Preliminary Business Case is finalised, Uisce Éireann will set out its preferred approach for the scheme. Preparations for the planning phase are already underway, with a planning application expected in early 2027, subject to the necessary statutory approvals.

"While regulatory processes must be followed, the project is moving in the right direction and remains on schedule," Minister Dillon said.

Minister Dillon also stressed the Government's broader commitment to upgrading wastewater infrastructure in towns like Newport, citing environmental compliance and sustainable growth as key priorities.

Reaffirming his personal investment in the project, he added: "I know how important this project is for the people of Newport. I will continue to work closely with Uisce Éireann, MARA and all relevant stakeholders to ensure this scheme progresses without delay. Newport has waited long enough for modern wastewater infrastructure, and I am determined to see this project delivered."
