Public consultation extended on proposed Mayo town traffic calming scheme

Mayo County Council is seeking further public feedback on plans including junction changes and road safety improvements
Mayo County Council has announced an extension to the public consultation period for a proposed traffic calming scheme in Foxford that includes significant road safety measures and changes to traffic movements in the town centre.
The local authority confirmed that the consultation, originally launched under Section 38 of the Road Traffic Act on May 5, has now been extended until June 19, 2026.
The proposed works focus on the junction of the N58 Main Street, N26 Chapel Road and L-5361 Lower Main Street Road in Foxford and are aimed at improving safety for motorists and pedestrians.
Planned measures include the upgrade and refurbishment of the existing pedestrian crossing, footpath and kerbline alterations, junction tightening works, additional signage, new road markings and associated infrastructure improvements.
A key element of the proposal is the removal of the existing right-turn movement from the N58 Main Street onto the N26 Chapel Road. If approved and completed, motorists will no longer be permitted to make this turn.
Mayo County Council said the proposed changes are designed to enhance road safety and improve traffic management at the busy junction.
After receiving numerous objections, the council is inviting more submissions and observations from residents, businesses and road users, with feedback accepted online or in writing up to 4.30pm on June 19.
Written submissions should be clearly marked ‘Section 38 Notice – Foxford Traffic Calming Proposals’.
The extended consultation period will provide additional time for the public to review the plans and have their say before any decision is made on the project.
