Christmas could be darker in Mayo town without new lighting team

Westport Chamber says urgent action is needed to ensure the town is lit up for Christmas 2026
Westport’s much-loved Christmas lights are at risk of not going ahead this year unless a new community-led team steps forward to take responsibility for the project.
With Christmas now just over 12 weeks away, Westport Chamber is appealing to local businesses, community groups and individuals to come forward and establish a new Christmas Lighting Committee or Town Team.
The Chamber announced earlier this year that, after two years of taking responsibility for organising and funding the Christmas lights following their transfer from Mayo County Council, it could no longer continue as the driving force behind the project.
During that period, the Chamber worked to secure funding and ensure the town had its annual festive lighting display. However, it says it does not have the personnel required to continue leading the fundraising effort.
Westport Chamber has confirmed that it is willing to assist with the administration of the project, but the fundraising and organisation will now need to be taken forward by a new team.
The Chamber is seeking people who can assist with fundraising and sponsorship, committee organisation, business and community engagement, as well as promotion and communications.
The Christmas lights are an important part of Westport’s festive season, as they help create the town’s Christmas atmosphere and attract visitors during the busy period.
The Chamber says a small group of committed people coming together now could make the difference in ensuring the lights go ahead.
Without a new team being established, there is a real possibility that Westport will not have its Christmas lighting display this year.
