Westport Bluegrass Festival announces programme for 20th anniversary edition

Good news for music fans in Mayo:

The Westport Folk and Bluegrass Festival reaches the significant milestone of its 20th anniversary this year.

The festival has announced its programme for 2026. It will run June 4–7.

Since its beginnings, the Westport Folk and Bluegrass festival has grown year on year while remaining true to its original vision: a town-wide, multi-venue celebration featuring concerts, sessions, and special events throughout Westport.

At its heart, the festival continues to provide a unique environment where musicians, audiences, and communities converge—fostering intergenerational and intercultural dialogue through music, and creating opportunities for connection, collaboration, and creative evolution.

The 2026 programme honours the festival’s past while celebrating its future, presenting the very best of local, national, and international folk, bluegrass, and American Old-Time artists.

Bluegrass legends Compton & Newberry (USA) and The Clem O’Brien Band, whose members are veterans of the first generation of Irish bluegrass, will appear alongside some of the most exciting rising stars of the contemporary bluegrass scene.

Alex Leach, currently touring with Wyatt Ellis, and three-time IBMA Bass Player of the Year Vickie Vaughan (of Della Mae fame) will each bring their own bands across the Atlantic for the very first time.

They are joined by bluegrass rising star Mason Via, along with Bigtooth, Big Love, Car Wash, and Empty Bottle String Band, among other American acts.

Irish artists are led by Luke Murray, with local festival favourites Time Rogers, Rocky Top String Band, and Irish traditional trio Freda Hatton, Julie Langan, and Declan Askin returning once again.

They will be joined by one of Ireland’s finest bluegrass musician and singer, Brendan Butler, for a very special collaborative session.

The 2026 festival also sees the return of much-loved signature events, including the Gospel Hour, BIg Session, Square Dance, and the ever-popular Mystery Gig.

The Academic Symposium, part of the Festival’s prestigious Universities Project, will explore the relationship between music and religion. In addition, a new collaboration with The Rolling Sun Book Festival will introduce the festival’s first-ever literary event, featuring discussions with three authors whose work focuses on bluegrass-related themes.

Marking its 20th anniversary, Westport Folk and Bluegrass Festival 2026 reaffirms the values that have defined its success: artistic excellence, community participation, and a sustainable vision for folk and bluegrass music in Ireland.

With a rich and diverse programme, an inclusive ethos, and deep roots in the cultural life of the region, the festival continues to grow as a model event—honouring tradition while embracing innovation.
