Mayo resource centre holds special anniversary celebration

Community gathers to celebrate 21 years of volunteerism at Westport Family and Community Resource Centre

Mayo resource centre holds special anniversary celebration

Westport Family and Community Resource Centre (FRC) marked its 21st anniversary with a heartwarming celebration that brought together volunteers, community partners, past participants, and supporters to honour more than two decades of collective effort and community impact.

Hosted at Westport Town Hall Theatre, the event showcased the spirit of collaboration that has defined the FRC since its founding in 2004. Attendees were welcomed with displays of photographs spanning the FRC’s history, its programmes, participants, and volunteers, highlighting the breadth of its work and the many individuals who have shaped its direction.

Reflections from the original Chairperson (John McDonagh) and Coordinator (Eoghan Murphy) offered insight into the FRCs beginnings, and the current Chairperson (Sonya Murray) recognised the ongoing commitment of volunteers and the centre’s evolving role in the community. Taken together, their contributions grounded the evening in the strong history of community development that continues to guide the FRC today.

Guest speakers included local TDs Keira Keogh and Rose Conway-Walsh, and Fergal Landy, CEO of the Family Resource Centre National Forum. Each shared appreciation for the centre’s commitment to inclusivity, resilience, and community support.

Keira Keogh reflected on her own experience of the Resource Centre, emphasising the “warm, welcoming, and accepting” environment that has long supported individuals and families. Her reflections underscored the enduring impact the FRC has had on those who have been part of its journey.

The evening also featured performances by Westport Ukulele Orchestra, Westport Town Hall Choir, and musician Gráinne Fahy. Local artist Breda Burns generously created art for the event’s displays, in recognition of the volunteers whose creativity and dedication sustain the Centre’s work.

Reflecting on the milestone, Project Coordinator Megan Burke shared: “Together, our paths reflect what community development is at its very best: people supporting one another, stepping into new responsibilities, and growing collectively. For many of us, the FRC has been not only a place to give back to Westport, but also a place to find grounding, identity, and community.”

The celebration stood as a testament to the FRC’s longevity, the dedication of its volunteers, and the continued support of the wider community.

The FRC extends sincere gratitude to Westport Town Hall, Berry’s Stationery, Teddy and The SuperValu Bakery Team, and The Mayo News for their contributions to the celebration and their ongoing support. Pictures were taken by Ugnius Brazdžiunas/Amayo Photography
