The Mayo Roads Policing Unit of An Garda Síochana arrested an HGV driver last night.

As part of their ongoing Road Safety Christmas Campaign, Gardaí were carrying out a speed checkpoint in Foxford Thursday evening (December 11), and detected this Heavy Goods Vehicle laden with a load weighing 30 Tonnes travelling at 90km/h in a 60km/h speed zone.

On further inspection, the following multiple Road Traffic breaches were detected: The driver tested positive for Cocaine. He was not insured, no tax, no tachograph in use and the driver was not wearing a seatbelt.

The driver subsequently was arrested for drug driving and has now been charged with Dangerous Driving to appear before the courts.

The truck was seized. Speeding at this level in a built-up area of a town puts everyone at risk.

An Garda Síochána inform: The consequences are real for drug driving. Never drive under the influence. Drug-driving is not just illegal – it’s life-threatening. Even small amounts can seriously impair reaction times and coordination.

An Garda Síochána urge everyone: "If you drive under the influence, you're risking your future – and someone else's life."
