Mayo's Brian Cusack ran into history on Sunday when he completed his 51st marathon in Dublin.

The well-known Westport United clubman completed the half century just two weeks ago in Galway, but was fighting fit on the start-line in Dublin.

Cusack, a keen runner, took up running in the early eighties and completed his first marathon in Letterkenny back in 1981.

He has also completed all but four of the Dublin City Marathons while also participating in marathons on the international stage. He credits his wife Maureen and his daughters Ashling and Ciara for inspiring him to keep churning out the miles.

Across the weekend, a record number of 18,486 runners completed the annual Dublin 26-miler.

Although the conditions were far from ideal, there was a great buzz in the capital city as many people’s highlighted day in the calendar arrived.

Amongst the record numbers were plenty of Mayo participants. Seán O’Brien from the Westport Athletics Club ran an impressive time of two hours and fifty minutes, while Colette Tuohy representing the Mayo AC clocked an impressive time of three hours and fourteen minutes.
