The two young men who lost their lives in a single-vehicle road traffic collision in the early hours of Sunday morning have been named locally as Cian Farrell (18) and Padraic Tuffy (19).

The fatal crash occurred on the L5140 local road at Laghtadawannagh, near Ballina, County Mayo, shortly after 4.15am on Sunday, March 1. The vehicle, carrying five occupants in total, was involved in a single-car collision that claimed the lives of both young men.

Three other passengers — two teenage males and an adult female, also in her late teens — were taken by ambulance to Mayo University Hospital following the incident. Their conditions are not believed to be life-threatening.

Gardaí and emergency services responded to the scene in the early hours of Sunday morning. Both Farrell and Tuffy, adult males in their late teens, were pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Coroner has been notified, and post-mortem examinations are to be carried out in due course.

The L5140 road remained closed as Garda Forensic Collision Investigators conducted a technical examination of the scene.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses and are particularly keen to hear from any road users who were in the area at the time of the collision and may have dash-cam or other camera footage that could assist the investigation. Investigations are ongoing.
