Mayo GAA clubs pay tribute to young player (16) following passing

Garrymore captain Liam Óg Horkan and Crossmolina Wellbeing Officer Julie Reilly both made presentations to Westport GAA club as a mark of respect to the late Westport Minor player Chris Gavin.

There were touching scenes before a Mayo club football game on Saturday evening, as Garrymore and Westport GAA clubs came together to pay tribute to the late Chris Gavin.

Chris, aged 16, tragically passed away in late April after taking ill days before, causing shock and sadness in the town of Westport.

He was a keen footballer, and played at underage level for his hometown club, who have retired the number 15 jersey in his honour for the remainder of 2025.

Prior to the SFL Division 1B meeting of Westport and Garrymore, Garrymore captain Liam Horkan presented a wreath to his opposite captain, Liam Shevlin, in memory of Chris.

Also, before the Minor Division One tie between Westport and Crossmolina Deel Rovers earlier in the week, the Crossmolina Wellbeing Officer, Julie Reilly, presented a plaque to the Westport Children’s Officer, Coral Sheridan.

“Chris was a talented young footballer with a bright future and a cherished member of our club,” Westport GAA club wrote in a statement.

“His loss has been felt far beyond our town, and the kindness shown by our fellow clubs in Mayo is a testament to the unity and compassion that defines the GAA community.”
