The incident occured at Westport Train Station
Reports have revealed the cost of the collision between two trains in Westport last month.
The investigation from railway safety inspectors also revealed that the incident where a freight train crashed into an unused passenger train could have been avoided had instructions within rulebooks been applied.

The eight-page Railway Accident Investigation Report (RAIU) report from the February 10 crash also revealed that the damage to the Intercity train was estimated to be in the region of €100,000.
Reports suggest the passenger train was moved into a siding at Westport railway station.
However, when the driver of the timber train undertook a number of shunting movements and propelled it down a siding, the freight train collided with the front carriage of the passenger train.
In the analysis, the RAIU determined that had the shunter and driver applied the instruction in the Iarnród Éireann Rule Book and the Professional Shunters Handbook, the accident would not have happened.
No one was injured in the collision, and the train, which has six carriages, was removed to Portlaoise.
For the report, the RAIU reviewed CCTV footage of the event, as well as an on-train data recorder. The full report can be viewed here.
