The Irish band Fontaines D.C. has earned recognition on Rolling Stone’s list of the 200 greatest rock songs of the century, with two Mayo men among the musicians behind the track Starburster.

Two Mayo men have earned a place on Rolling Stone’s list of the 200 greatest rock songs of the century as members of the Irish band Fontaines D.C.

Parke native Tom Coll, the band’s drummer, and Castlebar-born bassist Conor Deegan are among the musicians behind Starburster, which ranked 61st on the prestigious list.

Rolling Stone described the track: “If Fontaines D.C.’s ‘Starburster’ sounds like a panic attack, that’s the point.”

The recognition comes as Fontaines D.C. prepare to make history at Slane Castle, having announced earlier this year that they will become only the third Irish act to headline the iconic Meath venue.

The band will follow in the footsteps of some of music’s biggest names, including U2, Oasis, Madonna, David Bowie and The Rolling Stones, who have all performed at the legendary outdoor venue.

However, their headline show will mark a particularly significant milestone, as Fontaines D.C. become just the third Irish act to top the bill at Slane Castle, following in the footsteps of U2 and Thin Lizzy.
