THERE was much sadness in the Kiltimagh and Balla region with the news of the sudden death of Tom McNicholas, Derryvohey, last week.

Tom, who was in his early 80s, operated the local post office and shop for many years and he was widely known all around this region. His mother Lena ran the post office for many years before Tom took over at the helm.

The shop was a regular meeting place for so many people in former times. It carried a whole array of goods and provisions with the choc-ices in much demand during the summer months.

“It was a great rambling house in those times,” said Michael Holster from Carrandine. “So many people around here have great memories of times spent there and the chat about all the things making the news.

“Tom’s mother Lena did so much for so many people and was renowned for her kindness and courtesy. The news of Tom’s sudden passing came as a big shock to all of us in this area.”

Tom McNicholas in the family shop and Post Office with his good friend and neighbour, Sonny Holster from Carrandine, was taken in the late 1990s.

Several warm tributes have been paid to Tom in recent days. Marty and Marie O’Hora, Kiltimagh, recalled his numerous visits over the years. “Tom was an absolute gentleman and always in good form. He was great company and we will miss seeing him almost daily for the chats.”

Seán Galligan recalled school day memories from Kiltimagh VS. “Tom was an exam supervisor on my metal work exams in the Tech. We were always glad to see him coming as he helped where he could and did his best to make it relaxed for everyone. Many of the students in the tech will have fond memories of him helping us.”

Miriam O’Hora, Kiltimagh, stated: “I’m in shock to hear of Tom’s passing. I’ve known Tom as far back as I can remember, usually with a pint of Guinness in his hand and with a smile on his face. He was a gentleman to the last and was a very good friend to my Dad.”

Reposing was in O’Hora's Funeral Home, Kiltimagh, on Wednesday evening with removal to the Church of the Holy Family, Kiltimagh. Fr Michael Quinn was the chief celebrant at the con-celebrated Mass on Thursday and interment took place in Kilkinure Cemetery.
