Crossmolina remain top after former Mayo Minor kicks 1-9 in stylish win

Crossmolina's James Maheady was in fine form as he scored 1-9 in an impressive win over Westport

MAYO SFL DIVISION 1B

Crossmolina Deel Rovers 2-17

Westport 3-10

In Crossmolina

Brian Benson’s Crossmolina produced an excellent performance to overcome Westport in St Tiernan’s Park on Sunday.

Both sides were without key players as Crossmolina had Conor Loftus and Fionan Duffy absent while the West Mayo side were without the services of Colm Moran and Lee Keegan.

James Maheady was in excellent form once again as the former Mayo minor attacker kicked 1-9 across the afternoon. Points from Edward Gough, Kobe Mc Donald and Dylan Flynn had Crossmolina in good scoring form although they trailed at the break. Two quickfire goals from Pat Lambert meant the visitors led 2-4 to Crossmolina’s 0-8 at the interval.

A great goal from Finbar McLaughlin helped grow Westport’s lead but Maheady hit back as the impressive attacker showed that he knows where the posts are. Rory Brickenden kicked an excellent two-pointer for the visitors but the home side's Patrick Leddy hit a major which was followed up by another impressive finish to the net by Maheady.

All the momentum was with the hosts at that stage and they kicked on to run out impressive winners with a huge clash awaiting next weekend when they host Claremorris where the winner will advance to the league final.

A full match report will be carried in Tuesday’s edition of The Mayo News.
