MAYO SFC ROUND 3

GROUP 4

Garrymore 2-8

Charlestown Sarsfields 0-11

BALLINDINE

Charlestown Sarsfields came up in short in atrocious weather conditions at Ballindine despite an heroic second-half and will now face into the relegation play-offs in this year’s senior championship.

The East Mayo men almost pulled off a phenomenal second-half comeback but left themselves too much to do after an eight-point deficit at the break was whittled down to the minimum with seven minutes left to play.

A pair of lucky goals for the Nally brothers, Shane and Trevor, in the first-half proved to be the winning of the game for Martin Maloney's side as they failed to score for 24 minutes before holding on for victory.

Both goals were of the fortunate variety with Charlestown keeper Patrick Walsh caught out twice under a high ball and the Garrymore men bundling the ball over the line on each occasion.

A brilliant scoring return for Darren Quinn, who finished with seven points for the victors, and a solid midfield display from Gary Golden and Cathal Slattery helped Garrymore secure the victory and with it a home quarter-final in two weeks time.

Paul Towey was on form for Charlestown, hitting six points across the hour and putting in a phenomenal shift in almost every area of the pitch but his excellent showing, alongside Patrick Golden and Patrick Lenehan, wasn’t enough for Stephen Healy’s men.
