CHAMPIONS Westport United won the May0 U-17 Cup final in Castlebar.
MAYO U-17 GIRLS CUP FINAL
Westport United 2
Kiltimagh/Knock United 0
Celtic Park, Castlebar
Westport United celebrated cup glory after a tight encounter on Tuesday night.
It was a deserved victory for the Covies who scored one goal in each half, while also playing the better football.
The opening half was an epic battle. Neither team was able to get a strong foothold in the game. There were few touches in the box, with both teams' best efforts coming from long-range shots.
That was until the 30th minute when a long ball into the Kilitmagh/Knock box could not be dealt with, and Westport's Lauren Cusack was there to finish the ball into the back of the net.
This was the only goal of the opening half, the teams going in at the interval separated by the smallest margin.
However, Westport finished the game off early in the second half. With 47 minutes played, Aoife Meaney found herself on the end of a Katie Hughes cross and rattled the back of the net.
After some brilliant defending from the likes of Player-of-the-match, Emma Conway, Westport was able to see the game out and secure the victory.
