SHIELD WINNERS Ballyvary Blue Bombers were crowned Mayo U-17 Shield champions after victory over Swinford.
MAYO U-17 GIRLS SHIELD FINAL
Ballyvary Blue Bombers 6
Swinford FC 0
Umbro Park, Castlebar
Ballyvary Blue Bombers striker Katie Flynn was beaming with joy after her team's impressive display in Tuesday's final. Three goals from the lethal finisher in the first half of the decider put the Bombers in charge and Swinford never recovered.
“I thought it was going to be a really tight game but we got early goals. I feel happy about my performance. My teammates are class,” Katie told The Mayo News after the match.
She smartly dribbled past Swinford opponents, was calm on the ball and composed in her finish. Twice she struck the ball beautifully, leaving the goalkeeper no chance to save.
Her player-of-the-match award was well-deserved. Ballyvary coach Jacinta McDonnell applauded her striker's stellar performance.
“She was one of the youngest players on the pitch. She has a great future ahead of her. Commitment and drive are there.”
Flynn is still eligible to play U-15 football but her coach gave her the chance to shine an age-level higher and the striker showed her skills.
Ballyvary had entered the final as heavy favourites, but their coach said they took nothing for granted. “I told them to stay focussed. If you go down, keep your heads up. Pass the ball around. Don't be trying to rush it. If you need your time, take your time.”
Ballyvary's dominance continued into the second half and they ran out comfortable winners in the end.
A full report and aftermatch reaction will be carried in Tuesday's Mayo News.
