FOOTBALL Tyrone legend Peter Canavan will be the special guest at the Mayo News/O’Neills Club Stars Banquet next month.
Canavan to join the Club Stars
Tyrone football legend to be the Guest of Honour
Mike Finnerty
FORMER Tyrone footballer Peter Canavan will be the special guest at the Mayo News/O’Neills Club Stars Banquet next month. The two-time All-Ireland senior medal winner — who also won six All Stars — will be the guest of honour on Friday, December 3 at the sixth annual Club Stars event at Knockranny House Hotel, Westport. Canavan (39), who also works extensively as a pundit with TV3 and BBC sport, is one of the country’s most well-known footballers. During an illustrious club career, the Ballygawley native also won six county championship medals with Errigal CiarΡn, and two Ulster senior club championship titles. However, it was during his inter-county career with Tyrone, which spanned 17 seasons, that he captured the imagination of the GAA public. The 5’ 9” forward (who was nicknamed Peter ‘The Great’) won four Ulster senior championship medals and also went to capture All-Ireland medals in 2003 and 2005. “I’m delighted to be able to attend this year’s Club Stars Banquet,” Peter told The Mayo News. “I’ve always believed that club football is the bedrock of the GAA in this country and I’ve had some great days with my own club, Errigal CiarΡn, down through the years. “Club football has always been really strong in Mayo and I think it’s great that a team, Ballintubber, have emerged this year to win their first county title. I’ve visited Ballintubber GAA club on many occasions and I know they take their football seriously. “I’m looking forward to meeting all the Mayo GAA people on the night. The players, the coaches, the parents, and the partners... All the people that make up the club network of the GAA.” A large crowd is expected to turn out for the Banquet (which is being held in association with AIB) with all proceeds going to Mayo Cystic Fibrosis. This year’s Club Stars Team will be revealed on the night with the Manager of the Year receiving his presentation and the Player of the Year also being announced. The winners of this year’s Mayo News Golden Boot awards will also be recognised. Tickets for the charity banquet, which are on sale now, cost €60 and are available from The Mayo News office on (098) 25311 or e-mail clubstars@mayonews.ie
