FOOTBALL The 30 nominees for the sixth annual Mayo News/O’Neills Club Stars Team of the Year will be revealed next week.
Club Stars countdown
Daniel Carey
THE thirty nominees for the sixth annual Mayo News/O’Neills Club Stars Team of the Year will be revealed in next week’s Mayo News with the Mayo Senior and Intermediate football championships now over. The identities of the lucky thirty club footballers will be revealed in the pages of this sports supplement next week after the judging panel meet to finalise the list of nominees. The nominees, Club Stars Team of the Year and Manager of the Year will, once again, be selected by the judges: Sean Feeney (Secretary, Mayo GAA Board), Sean Rice (Mayo News columnist), Eamonn Clarke (Mid West Radio GAA analyst) and Austin Garvin (Mayo News GAA reporter). As usual, 25 players will be selected from the Mayo senior football championship and five ‘wild cards’ from the Intermediate championship. These nominees will be the stars of the show at the Mayo News/O’Neills Club Stars Charity Banquet at Knockranny House Hotel, Westport on Friday, December 3. All proceeds from this year’s event (which is being organised in association with AIB) will go to the Mayo Branch of Cystic Fibrosis Ireland. “We’re delighted that all the proceeds from this year’s Club Stars Banquet will be going towards a vital and ambitious project here in Mayo,” said Mike Finnerty, Sports Editor of The Mayo News. “This is a marvellous opportunity for us to highlight the work done by so many people right across the region. “Many of them have given years and years of service to promoting awareness of Cystic Fibrosis and fund-raising, so any monies raised will be a great help to them as they continue to strive to build a specialist CF unit in Castlebar. “The Club Stars Banquet will also be a chance for people to hear about the great, unseen work that’s being done by the Mayo Cystic Fibrosis committee,” he added. “Most of their work is done far from the public spotlight so December 3 is an opportunity for us to hear about their organisation.” “Cystic Fibrosis is something that touches so many families and so many people in this county,” said Michael Duffy, Editor of The Mayo News. “Despite these difficult economic times, I’m sure that people right across the county will support this very worthy initiative in any way they can.”
A Good cause ALL the proceeds from this year’s Club Stars Banquet will be donated to the Mayo Branch of Cystic Fibrosis Ireland. They are currently fund-raising for a specialist unit in Castlebar.
