There is great excitement in Louisburgh today after news broke that exciting young striker Tom Cannon has signed for Leicester City following a multi-million-pound transfer from Everton.
The signature of the Liverpool-born striker was much sought-after during the transfer window with a number of clubs trying to lure him from Goodison Park where he has been learning his trade since the age of six.
The former Irish underage star has strong links with the Louisburgh and Balla areas and former chairman of West Mayo GAA Sean McEvilly previously told The Mayo News the family have long been renowned for their sporting talent.
“The Cannons from Mulagh were always lovely people and deserve every bit of success that comes their way. Tom’s granduncles, Marty and Noel, played football with Louisburgh and were very handy in front of goal themselves,” Sean explained.
Cannon played all through the ranks at Everton and made four senior appearances for the Toffees, most recently as a substitute in last Saturday's 1-0 defeat by Wolverhampton Wanderers. He spent last season on loan in the Championship with Preston North End where he scored eight goals in 21 games.
Cannon is hoping to make a big impression at Leicester and said he jumped at the chance to join the former Premier League champions.
"When a club like Leicester come calling, it's hard to say no. Everyone knows where the club belongs - that's in the Premier League. I'm sure that's the aim this season, just to get back to the top and then take it from there."
On the international scene, Cannon has a number of Irish underage caps to his name and he is currently taking time out to decide where his senior future lies. Stephen Kenny will be hoping the young man chooses Ireland, which would be a huge boost to his striking options.
