Player with Mayo roots set to start for Ireland v Turkey

Manchester United player Aoife Mannion, niece of former Mayo footballer Pat Kelly, has been named in the starting lineup for the Republic of Ireland as they face Turkey tonight(Friday) in the UEFA Nations League.

Mannion, previously of Aston Villa and Manchester City, is in line to make her twelfth cap in tonight’s Tallaght clash.

The Mayo descendant has had an unfortunate injury record since signing for the Red Devils, however recently notched her first goal for the club in a 6-0 rout of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Charlton Athletic player Melisa Filis, whose mother hails from Knock, will be hoping to make her Girls in Green debut from the bench.

Filis, who previously represented England at underage level, is listed among the substitutes in manager Carla Ward’s first game at the helm.

“Melisa offers something different, she’s front-footed and she’s aggressive,” Ward stated following her first squad announcement.
