THE late Westport United footballer Adam Mulchrone will be remembered this weekend when Galway United and Sligo Rovers contest the annual Adam Mulchone Memorial game.

The winning side will take home the Adam Mulchrone Memorial Cup, which is named after the late Adam Mulchrone.

Mulchrone, who passed away in January 2019, was a talented soccer player and a much-loved member of Westport United. ACT for Meningitis is once again the charity partner for the game, which kicks off at Abbvie United Park at 2 pm on Saturday, January 25. Admission is €10.

Both Galway United and Sligo Rovers are expected full strength for this game as the build-up continues to the League of Ireland season.

Both sides were impressive last season and were in contention for the title right up until the dying embers of the season.

There’s a real local Westport feel to the Sligo Rovers team. John Russell cut his managerial teeth with Westport United while players like Conor Walsh, Conor Reynolds, Conor Cannon and Jamie O’Malley all came through the United ranks at underage level and are expected to be involved at some stage on Saturday.

Galway’s links with Westport United are also strong. The current Westport manager and Director of Football, Anthony O’Neill, is a former player with the club and, until his move to Westport, was a member of the Galway United management team.
