A lacklustre Mayo advanced to the quarter-finals of the Oscar Traynor Cup despite a 2-1 defeat to an improved Roscommon side on Sunday. Mayo were without a number of key players with team captain, Jordan Loftus, picking up an injury in the warm-up, and Iospeh O’Reilly, Niall Brennan and Ben Edeh absent for various reasons.

Stand-in skipper, Darren Browne, saw his penalty saved at 0-0, after Roscommon ’keeper Gary Reynolds upended Johnny Cocozza. Three minutes later, Roscommon took the lead when the excellent Rian Carpenter finished a loose ball following a free kick for a hand ball. Reynolds’s outstanding save redeemed the foul, and some earlier handling errors which provided opportunities for Mayo, that they were unable to take.

Roscommon doubled their lead when Cian Kelly waltzed through the Mayo defence, cut inside and shot past Stefan Hester.

Jason Hunt pulled one back, with a case-study free-kick, three minutes from full-time.

Mayo were poor, generally. They made wrong choices, lacked a cutting edge and didn’t really boss any period of the game. Roscommon, who were hugely improved on last year’s showing, deserved their win.

A full report and reaction will be carried in Tuesday’s Mayo News.
