Three goals from Ryan Fadden and a fourth Celtic goal from Cian Walsh, added the CMR Fire and Security Under-21 Cup to Castlebar Celtic’s impressive haul for 2024.
The result was a fair one. Celtic were older and bigger; they moved the ball better and took their chances. Despite all that, the younger Ballina Town side gave a tremendous account of themselves and contributed enormously to a great game of football. The match and their success getting to the final will stand to them in the future.
Celtic were on top from the off but couldn’t transfer their early superiority to the scoreboard. Town came into it but they struggled to get through the Celtic rear-guard of Eoin Hughes and Shane Cunningham.
When Walsh put Fadden through on thirty-six, few expected the big striker to find the net but he powered past Daire O’Connor, to make it 1-0. He added a second when Daniel Cowan couldn’t hold Walsh’s free-kick and, in the second half, a third that started at the back involving Hughes and Brian McDonnell. Walsh wrapped it before the end.
